Never Forget: SSCO’s 9/11 Candlelight Vigil

On Friday, September 11th at 6:45pm, South Side Civic Organization (SSCO) held a candlelight vigil at Palmisano Park, gathering on the park’s central hilltop overlooking the Chicago skyline to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11th. The free, family-friendly event was open to the whole community, with candles provided for anyone who didn’t bring their own.
Community members gathered for the evening as dusk fell, where Froy Jimenez offered a brief reflection on the events of September 11th, what the day continues to mean 25 years later, and what it looks like to come together as a community in its wake. The vigil also served as a moment of thanks for local first responders and veterans, honoring both those currently serving and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Under the leadership of Froy Jimenez, South Side Civic Organization continues to focus on building genuine rapport across Bridgeport and Canaryville, bringing neighbors together around moments that matter to the community.
This event is supported by the American Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which advances a leadership framework that encourages civic engagement and strengthens communities. ASI is reviving the American Dream by fostering civic engagement and recruiting neighbors to reengage in their communities.
